When you pack for a trip to the city, keep it light and leave plenty of room for the souvenirs you'll want to buy once you get there. Here are some things you can leave at home on your next city trip.
1. Your Own Towels - A good towel is soft and fluffy and can take up more space in a travel bag than two days' worth of clothes. Trust that your hotel will have decent towels available and save the suitcase space for more important items. You'll avoid extra bag fees.
2. Your Car - Traveling in a large city like Seattle or New York City is easier to do by taxi than as a driver. New York and Seattle cabs, as in other cities, are easy to find and the drivers are familiar with the destinations. Carry a little extra cash and leave the stress of trying to navigate an unfamiliar city at home.
3. Money Belt - When you walk through a Chicago landmark wearing a small pouch on your belt it's almost like asking someone to steal your money. Instead of using a money belt, wear a pair of pants that have zipper pockets. A money belt is a neon sign that advertises you as a tourist. It is far safer to secure your money in your normal clothing so that you don't attract unwanted attention while you walk through the city.
4. Valuable Jewelry - It can be tempting to take along some of your favorite jewels, especially if you're visiting the city for a formal event. Resist the urge to pack the quality pieces, though. Valuable jewelry is small and easy to lose when you are moving from place to place. It can also be a target for theft. Costume jewelry can be just as eye-catching, but not as painful to lose on a trip.
5. Flashy Formal Wear - Keep it simple while you travel. Don't bring along the floor length gown with a beaded bodice if you're going to be dressing out of a suitcase. Every woman's wardrobe should include a simple black dress that would be appropriate for almost any occasion. Bring along the right accessories, or plan a fun shopping trip to finish off your look once you get to the city. This can be a great excuse to take in some shopping on Rodeo Drive or the other famous shopping districts in Los Angeles.
6. Extra Socks and Underwear - Don't fill up your travel bags with mundane underwear and socks. You can stay comfortable for as long as necessary if you have three pairs of socks and underwear and access to a sink. Wear a pair, wash a pair, and dry a pair every day. You'll always have a fresh pair to wear in the morning but you won't have to sacrifice space in the suitcase for your intimates.
