I was the guest expert on a teleclass for writers, talking about the financial side of publishing a book, when the above phrase popped out of my mouth.

An unfortunate story in Germany illustrates the importance of talking money with your partner. It may be an extreme example, but it can serve to forewarn others none-the-less.
The richest woman in Germany – BMW heiress Susanne Klatten – was the victim of extortion when the man she was having an affair with tried to blackmail her. The 46-year-old married mother-of-three fell for Helg Sgarbi, subsequently meeting him in inexpensive hotels in BMW's home city of Munich.

I'm convinced that the way to a man's heart is not through his stomach but through his wallet. I don't mean by spending our way through it, but by getting involved with the family finances.
I meet bright, educated women all the time who leave the money management up to the guys, because it bores them, they don't know what to ask, or they're convinced that it will all be taken care of.

If you’re like me and buys gifts year round and tucks them away – pull out the gifts and go through them. If you don’t check out what you’ve already bought, you may end up buying another gift you don’t need. Trust me on this one – last month I went to the Holiday Show in Tacoma and came home with several gifts I didn’t need to buy.
